Thigh Lift

THIGH LIFT

Dr Watts is not currently taking on new patients for the Thigh Lift procedure. To help you on your plastic surgery journey please see the information below.

Ageing, genetics and significant weight loss can result in excess loose skin and fat that can be uncomfortable. The thighs can often be an area of concern as it can affect the way your clothes fit, how you feel and even lead to chafing, irritation and skin rashes. A Thigh Lift can be performed to remove the loose skin and excess tissue to create a firmer and more defined upper leg contour.

WHAT IS THIGH LIFT SURGERY?

Thigh Lift surgery, also known as Thighplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at reshaping the thighs by reducing excess skin and, in some cases, fat, resulting in proportioned contours of the thighs and lower body. This procedure is typically sought by individuals who have loose, excess skin as a result of weight loss, ageing, or other factors. A Thigh Lift can significantly alter the appearance of the thighs.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR THE SURGERY?

Good candidates for Thigh Lift surgery are typically individuals who:

    • Have Excess Soft Tissue Along the Inner or Outer Thigh: Candidates often seek a Thigh Lift after experiencing significant weight loss, which can leave excess, loose skin on the thighs.
    • Are at a Stable Weight: It’s important for candidates to be at a stable weight before undergoing a Thigh Lift, as significant weight fluctuations can affect the results of the surgery.
    • Are in Good General Health: Candidates should be in overall good health, without any medical conditions that impair healing or increase the risk of surgery.
    • Have Realistic Expectations: Understanding the potential outcomes and limitations of Thigh Lift surgery is crucial. Candidates should have a positive outlook and realistic expectations about the results.
    • Non-smokers or Willing to Quit: Smoking can significantly hinder the healing process. Candidates should be non-smokers or willing to quit smoking well in advance of the surgery and throughout the recovery period.
    • Are Committed to a Healthy Lifestyle: A commitment to a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition and fitness, is important for maintaining the results of the surgery.

Dr. Watts conducts a thorough consultation to evaluate whether an individual is a suitable candidate for Thigh Lift surgery, taking into account their specific concerns, overall health, and goals.

WHAT CAN THIGH LIFT SURGERY DO FOR ME?

Thigh lift surgery offers benefits for patients:

    • Thigh Contour: The procedure can significantly alter the shape and tone of the thighs
    • Reduction of Excess Skin and Fat: It effectively removes excess loose skin and can reduce localised pockets of fat, which may be particularly beneficial for those who have experienced significant weight loss
    • Comfort and Mobility: Excess skin can cause discomfort, chafing, and irritation, especially during physical activities. A Thigh Lift can alleviate these issues, making it easier to move freely and comfortably
    • Long-Lasting Results: While no cosmetic procedure can stop the ageing process, the results of a Thigh Lift can be long-lasting, particularly when accompanied by a stable weight and healthy lifestyle.

    HOW IS THE SURGERY PERFORMED?

The Thigh Lift procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and involves the following steps:

    • Incision: The type and length of the incision depends on the area of the thigh being treated and the amount of excess skin. Incisions may be made in the groin area, extending downward and wrapping around the back of the thigh for more extensive Thigh Lifts.
    • Removing Excess Skin and Fat: Depending on the amount of excess skin and fat, Dr. Watts may use Liposuction to remove fat before excising the excess skin. The underlying tissues are then reshaped and tightened.
    • Closing the Incisions: The incisions are closed with sutures, which may be absorbable or may need to be removed after a few weeks.
    • Results: Tighter contours of the thighs are apparent almost immediately, although initial swelling and bruising are to be expected.

Dr. Watts customises the surgical plan for each patient, taking into account their individual anatomy and goals to achieve optimal results.

    RECOVERY AFTER THIGH LIFT SURGERY

The recovery process following a Thigh Lift is a crucial period where patients need to take special care to optimise healing and results, recovery generally includes the following:

    • Post-Surgery Care: After the surgery, dressings or bandages will be applied to the incisions, and you may be required to wear a compression garment to reduce swelling and support the thighs as they heal.
    • Managing Discomfort: Some bruising, swelling, and discomfort are to be expected after surgery. Pain can typically be managed with medications prescribed by Dr. Watts. ice packs my also offer some relief and help reduce swelling.
    • Activity Restrictions: Patients are generally advised to avoid strenuous activities, particularly those involving the lower body, for several weeks. Dr. Watts will provide specific guidelines regarding when you can resume activities and return to work.
    • Follow-Up Visits: Regular follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor the progress of your healing. During these visits, Dr. Watts will check the status of your incisions and advise on further care.
    • Recovery Time: Most patients can return to work and light daily activities within a few weeks, but complete recovery and the final results of the surgery may take several months.
    • Scarring: Scars are an expected part of Thigh Lift surgery. They will gradually heal and fade over time, but they will never disappear completely. Dr. Watts will provide advice on scar care.

    RISKS OF THIGH LIFT SURGERY

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with Thigh Lift surgery. Dr. Watts fully informs patients of these risks, which may include:

    • Anaesthesia Risks: As with any procedure involving anaesthesia, there are risks such as allergic reactions and effects on cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
    • Infection and Bleeding: These are common risks associated with any surgery and can usually be managed effectively if they occur.
    • Scarring: Scars are an inevitable outcome of Thigh Lift surgery, and their severity varies from person to person. Some people may experience poor wound healing or keloid scarring.
    • Asymmetry: There might be asymmetries between the two thighs. This is not uncommon as the human body is typically not symmetrical. However, significant asymmetry may require further surgery.
    • Changes in Skin Sensation: Temporary numbness or changes in skin sensation may occur and usually resolve over time. In rare cases sensation changes may be permanent.
    • Poor Wound Healing: Some patients may experience delayed or poor wound healing, which can affect the final results and may require further treatment.

Dr. Watts discusses these risks in detail during the consultation process and provides care to reduce complications.

    FAQS ABOUT THIGH LIFT SURGERY

How long will the results of a Thigh Lift last?
The results of a Thigh Lift can be long-lasting, especially if you maintain a stable weight and follow a healthy lifestyle. However, ageing and gravity will continue to affect your skin’s elasticity over time.

Will there be visible scars after a Thigh Lift?
Yes, scarring is an inevitable part of the Thigh Lift procedure. The scars are located in areas that can often be concealed by clothing. Dr. Watts employs surgical techniques to reduce the appearance of scarring. Over time, these scars will fade and become less noticeable.

Can a Thigh Lift be done with other body contouring procedures?
Yes, a Thigh Lift can be done with other procedures such as Liposuction, an Abdominoplasty, or a Body Lift, depending on your overall health and the specific recommendations of Dr. Watts.

What is the ideal time to consider a Thigh Lift?
Generally, a good time for a Thigh Lift is when you have achieved a stable weight, especially after significant weight loss, and your weight has been stable for at least six months. It’s also important to be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the outcome.

How should I prepare for Thigh Lift surgery?
Preparation for Thigh Lift surgery may include lab testing, medical evaluations, adjusting current medications, avoiding certain medications and supplements that can increase bleeding, and stopping smoking. Dr. Watts will provide specific instructions based on your individual situation.
