Who Is a Good Candidate?

Good candidates for Breast Augmentation are those who are looking to increase the volume of their breasts. If you’re physically healthy, have realistic expectations, and your breasts are fully developed, you may be a suitable candidate. Breast Augmentation may also be a viable option for you if:

  • Your breasts have lot volume and firmness
  • Your breasts have lost volume due to weight loss
  • One of your breasts is noticeably different in size and shape than the other

It’s important to have a consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Guy Watts, to discuss your goals and expectations and to understand the risks and potential benefits of the procedure.

WHAT CAN A BREAST AUGMENTATION DO FOR ME?

  • Increase breast volume
  • Change breast shape
  • Alter appearance of cleavage
  • Increase upper pole fullness
  • Add volume that may have been lost due to pregnancy, weight loss or ageing
  • Reduce Asymmetry
  • Bring breast size in proportion with the rest of the body

BREAST AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE AND RECOVERY PERIOD

How Is the Surgery Performed?

Breast Augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes between one to two hours to perform. The procedure generally involves the following steps:

  • Incision: Incisions are made in areas to reduce their visibility. Dr Watts typically places the incision in the fold under the breast (inframammary fold). Over time the incision will heal and fade.
  • Inserting and Placing the Implant: The breast implant is inserted into a pocket either under the pectoral muscle (a submuscular placement), or directly behind the breast tissue, over the pectoral muscle (a submammary/subglandular placement). For those undergoing Breast Augmentation for the first time Dr Watts usually uses the Dual Plane approach whereby the implant is placed partly behind the pectoral muscle.
  • Closing the Incisions: Incisions are closed with layered sutures in the breast tissue and with sutures, skin adhesive, or surgical tape to close the skin
  • Seeing the Results: The results of Breast Augmentation are immediately noticeable however there will be swelling and bruising immediately after surgery. The implants will also take time to settle into their position.

Dr. Watts performs Breast Augmentation on an inpatient basis, using general anaesthesia. The procedure will usually take 1½ – 2 hours to complete. Dressings will be placed over the breasts and a supportive bra applied after the procedure. After surgery you will be observed overnight for monitoring and to make sure your recovery progresses well before you are discharged (usually the following day) under the care of a friend or family member. Day surgery facilities are also available for those patients who do not require an overnight stay.

Written procedure specific information sheets will be given to you in order for you to prepare for your surgery and the recovery period. You may experience mild to moderate discomfort after the procedure, therefore a postoperative analgesia regime will be tailored to meet your specific needs. In general, you can expect to return to office-based jobs within 10 days and more physical work within 14-20 days.

Recovery after Breast Augmentation

Recovery from Breast Augmentation surgery varies for each individual, but here’s a general guideline:

  • Post-Surgery Care: Immediately after surgery, you’ll be placed in a recovery area for monitoring. You may feel groggy after general anaesthetic. Your breasts will be covered by bandages as well as, a support bra to reduce swelling and support the breasts as they heal
  • First Few Days: You’re likely to feel tired and sore for a few days following the surgery, but you’ll be up and about in 24 to 48 hours. Most of your discomfort can be managed by medication prescribed by your anaesthetist and Dr Watts.
  • Healing Process: Over the first week, you’ll notice that the swelling will start to reduce and bruising will begin to dissipate. Dressing and any stitches are usually removed at two weeks after surgery.
  • Returning to Normal Activities: While it’s important to rest, you will be encouraged to walk around as soon as you feel up to it. Most patients can return to work and light activities within 2 weeks. Avoid strenuous activities for at least the first 6 weeks or until advised by Dr Watts
  • Long-term Care: Follow-up appointments are crucial for monitoring your recovery. It’s important to follow all the instructions provided by Dr Watts, including guidelines about wearing your support bra and activity levels

Plastic surgery comes with inherent risks, it’s crucial for patients to be aware of potential complications and make informed decisions. Anaesthesia is used in most surgical procedures for patient safety and comfort. However, in rare cases, it can lead to complications such as allergic reactions, lung infections, stroke and even heart complications. It’s also important to keep in mind that all surgeries result in some form of scarring. While Dr. Watts often uses techniques to reduce the appearance of scars and strategically places them, some patients might experience hypertrophic or keloid scarring, which is a raised and more prominent scar.

It’s essential for anyone considering plastic surgery to thoroughly research and understand these risks. Read more about risks and potential complications of plastic surgery.
