Breast Augmentation Perth

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at enhancing the size, shape, and fullness of the breasts. This is typically achieved through the placement of breast implants under the glandular tissue or chest muscles.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Good candidates for breast augmentation are those who are looking for enhancement, not perfection, in the way they look. If you’re physically healthy, have realistic expectations, and your breasts are fully developed, you may be a suitable candidate. Breast augmentation may also be a viable option for you if:

  • Your breasts have lot volume or are less firm after having children
  • Your breasts have lost volume due to weight loss
  • One of your breasts is noticeably different in size and shape than the other

It’s important to have a consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Guy Watts, to discuss your goals and expectations, and to understand the risks and benefits of the procedure.

WHAT CAN A BREAST AUGMENTATION DO FOR ME?

    • Increase breast size
    • Enhance cleavage
    • Increase upper pole fullness
    • Restore lost breast volume due to pregnancy, weight loss or the ageing process
    • Enhance the shape and improve breast contours
    • Improve symmetry
    • Bring breast size in proportion with rest of the body

Breast augmentation is usually performed alone however depending on your breasts it may be necessary to combine it with a lift. During you consultation Dr Watts will assess your breasts and advise you on the most suitable procedure to enhance your contours. It may also be possible to combine this with an abdominoplasty as part of a post pregnancy surgery.

BREAST AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE AND RECOVERY PERIOD

    How Is the Surgery Performed?

Breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia and takes about one to two hours. The procedure involves the following steps:

    • Incision: Incisions are made in inconspicuous areas to minimise visible scarring. Dr Watts places the incision in the fold under the breast (inframammary fold). Over time the incision will become pale, flat and barely discernible.
    • Inserting and Placing the Implant: The breast implant is inserted into a pocket either under the pectoral muscle (a submuscular placement), or directly behind the breast tissue, over the pectoral muscle (a submammary/subglandular placement). For those undergoing breast augmentation for the first time Dr Watts uses the Dual Plane approach whereby the implant is placed behind the pectoral muscle.
    • Closing the Incisions: Incisions are closed with layered sutures in the breast tissue and with sutures, skin adhesive, or surgical tape to close the skin
    • Seeing the Results: The results of breast augmentation are immediately visible. Over time, post-surgical swelling will reduce and incision lines will fade

Dr. Watts performs breast augmentation on an inpatient basis, using general anaesthesia. The procedure will usually take 1½ hours to complete. Comfortable dressings will be placed over the breasts and a firm supportive bra applied after the procedure. After surgery you will be observed overnight to ensure your recovery is progressing well before you are allowed to return home the next day with a friend or family member. Day surgery facilities are also available for those patients who do not require an overnight stay.

Written procedure specific information sheets will be given to you in order for you to prepare for your surgery and the recovery period. You may experience mild to moderate discomfort after the procedure and so a postoperative analgesia regime will be tailored to meet your specific needs. In general, you can expect to return to office-based jobs within 7 days and more physical work within 10-14 days.

    Recovery after Breast Augmentation

Recovery from breast augmentation surgery varies for each individual, but here’s a general guideline:

    • Post-Surgery Care: Immediately after surgery, you’ll be placed in a recovery area for monitoring. You may feel groggy after general anaesthetic. Your breasts will covered by your support bra to minimise swelling and support the breasts as they heal
    • First Few Days: You’re likely to feel tired and sore for a few days following the surgery, but you’ll be up and around in 24 to 48 hours. Most of your discomfort can be controlled by medication prescribed by your anaesthetist and Dr Watts.
    • Healing Process: Over the first week, you’ll notice that the swelling starts to reduce and any bruising will begin to minimise. Dressing and any stitches are usually removed at two weeks after surgery.
    • Returning to Normal Activities: While it’s important to rest, you’re encouraged to walk around as soon as you feel up to it. Most patients can return to work and light activities within 2 weeks. Avoid strenuous activities for at least the first 6 weeks or until advised by Dr Watts
    • Long-term Care: Follow-up appointments are crucial for monitoring your recovery. It’s important to follow all the instructions provided by Dr Watts, including guidelines about wearing your support bra and activity levels

Plastic surgery comes with inherent risks. While modern techniques and advancements have made these procedures safer than ever, it’s crucial for patients to be aware of potential complications and make informed decisions.

Anaesthesia is used in most surgical procedures to ensure the patient’s comfort. However, in rare cases, it can lead to complications such as allergic reactions, lung infections, stroke, and even heart complications. Also, keep in mind that all surgeries result in some form of scarring. While Dr. Watts often uses techniques to minimise and strategically place these scars, some patients might experience hypertrophic or keloid scarring, which is raised and more prominent.

It’s essential for anyone considering plastic surgery to thoroughly research and understand these risks. Read more about risks and potential complications of plastic surgery.
