    With plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery procedures becoming more popular patients need to have a heightened awareness of who they choose to perform their procedures. Unfortunately, there are few laws in place to protect patients against unqualified surgeons practicing in Australia. It is therefore important to takes steps to protect yourself at all costs. There is only one qualification for Plastic Surgery in Australia and that is through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. A qualified Plastic Surgeons will carry the title Specialist Plastic Surgeon and be listed through the Australian Society for Plastic Surgeons.

    Plastic surgery can be termed either as reconstructive or cosmetic. Reconstructive plastic surgery is aimed at treating abnormal features associated with an acquired or congenital medical condition. The aim of the treatment is to restore function or form to its previous or normal state. On the other hand, cosmetic plastic surgery is aimed at taking certain features and enhancing them beyond the patients norm.

    There is an important difference between reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery in regards to Medicare. Reconstructive plastic surgery is partly covered by Medicare and private health insurance and eligible procedures are coded with an item number. Dr. Watts will assess your eligibility for a reconstructive plastic surgery procedure and provide you with the appropriate Medicare Item Numbers to take to your private health insurer. Cosmetic surgical procedures are not covered by Medicare or your private health insurance company.

    Depending on your Private Insurance coverage for Plastic Surgery Procedures the following operations may be partially covered;

    • Nose surgery & rhinoplasty to correct crooked noses after trauma or blocked noses causing breathing difficulties.
      Nasal Airway Surgery to correct breathing difficulties caused by enlarged turbinate’s or deviated nasal septum.
