We are excited to announce a new product specifically designed to reduce a double chin without having to go through surgery! Double chins can prove to be stubborn to get rid of, even with the strictest diet and exercise plan. Fat in this area can be affected by age, genetics and weight changes making you look or feel unhealthy, overweight or even older than you really are.
Our new product is a synthetic version of a substance that occurs naturally in the human body (Deoxycholic acid) which breaks down fat cells so they can no longer store or accumulate fat.
It is approved to be injected into submental fat (fat under the chin) improving your chin contours and redefining your neckline. It can only be used under the chin and on no other part of the body.
Deoxycholic acid is designed to be effective in a particular subset of patients and is not a substitute for a formal necklift. The main difference being that no skin is removed and no significant skin tightening can be achieved through the injections. Therefore the ideal candidate is someone with a focused deposit of fat in the submental area with good quality skin and minimal skin laxity. Therefore a personal consultation with Dr Watts or his Cosmetic Nurse Emma is essential in seeking the right advice. The benefit of consulting with a team that can offer both surgical and non-surgical solutions is that you will have the best advice and treatment regime offered.
The main issue to be aware of is any degree of excess skin or skin with poor elastin and collagen quality. The problem that may arise is that when the fat is dissolved it could exacerbate the amount of excess skin. There are solutions to the problem but these revolve around skin tightening procedures. This is why it important to seek an expert consultation and also be aware of alternative procedures that can address skin laxity.
Once your desired results are achieved, re treatment is not expected as results are maintained for at least 4 years. This treatment results in a permanent reduction of fat cells in the area however, as excessive weight gain may reverse your results we recommend you follow a healthy diet and exercise plan following your treatment.
It is common to see visible improvements within 2-4 treatments. Up to 6 treatments may be administered, spaced at least 4 weeks apart.
You will be reviewed by Dr Watts and our Cosmetic Nurse Emma who will perform a full facial analysis and determine whether you are a suitable candidate for the treatment. Dr Watts will then customise the treatment to your unique anatomy and circumstances.
A transparent grid is then set on your chin to guide the injection specialist and injection sites are pre marked to ensure accurate and balanced results. Ice or a local anaesthetic may be applied to the area to improve comfort. The average number of injections required for the treatment is around 30 and can take around 60 minutes to complete.
As with other injectable treatments you may experience side effects with the injection of Deoxycholic acid. Most patients experience mild to moderate pain or discomfort at the time of injection.
Common side effects that may last 1-2 weeks include:
Areas of hardness in the treatment area
While unlikely talk to Dr Watts if you experience any of the following: trouble swallowing, an uneven smile, taste disturbances, or discolouration, unusual hair loss or an ulcer (open sore) at the site of injection.
Most people can return immediately to normal activities but avoid strenuous activity for a few days.
As with all injectable treatments if you have a special event coming up then make sure you plan your treatments well in advance to ensure you are looking your best!
Those with liver and kidneys problems
Those with an infection at the injection site
